2. How do I get an Elixir job without commercial experience?
This is one of our most asked questions. Candidates can find it tricky to get their ‘foot in the door’ to work with Elixir. Although these opportunities can be few and far between, they do come up & you want to be prepared for this.
We recommend the following:
Join the Elixir community - Attend meetups and conferences where you can meet like-minded people, ask advice and share ideas.
Join the Elixir Slack channel & similar forums and get involved in conversations.
Contribute to Open-Source projects and demonstrate the skills you’ve picked up.
Join GitHub and document your journey with Elixir.
Use your CV to showcase everything you have learnt about Elixir so far, include the personal projects you’re working on and any other relevant details.
Look for opportunities that fit your current skill-set as well as also mentioning Elixir, this will be the perfect way into an Elixir role.
Be realistic with your expectations, it may be unlikely that you get the same rate / salary you’re currently on when using a new language. You may have to work your way up.
Finally, demonstrate the right attitude - show the willing to learn and commit.
As challenging as it may feel, don’t give up! The right opportunity for you will come around.
