Frequently Asked Questions

A few answers to common questions about Beam it, how I work & where I can help

What is Beam it Recruitment?

I'm Hayden Evans, I've been recruiting in the BEAM market since 2014, starting with Erlang then later Elixir as it rose in popularity.

I spend my working days speaking with engineers & companies using the technologies in production, helping them find their next opportunity or colleague.

In which countries do you offer services?

The short answer is anywhere

I've successfully placed engineers with clients in countries including, but not limited to, the United Kingdom, Ireland, USA, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, France, Germany, Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Poland, Finland, Israel & the UAE.

Whilst I'm based in the UK, I've always worked internationally, helping companies hire Erlang & Elixir engineers across Europe, North & South America, the Middle East & beyond.

If your country isn't listed, please get in touch anyway, I'm always happy to discuss how I could help.

Which technologies do you specialise in?

Erlang & Elixir, with a focus on companies running the BEAM virtual machine in production.

I've spent years building a network within this community, so if you're looking for a particular skillset or struggling to find suitable candidates, there's a good chance I already know someone worth speaking with.

Can you help us hire Erlang or Elixir engineers internationally?

Yes, international Erlang & Elixir recruitment is what I do.

Whether you're hiring your first Elixir developer in the USA, growing an Erlang team in Europe or looking further afield, let's begin with a call to discuss what you need.

We'll cover the technical requirements, salary, location & working arrangements, along with anything else that matters to your team.

Do you recruit for remote roles?

Yes

It's useful to clarify what remote means for your business, as some companies can hire anywhere whilst others have restrictions around countries, time zones or the right to work.

We'll discuss this before starting a search so we're approaching people who can actually join your team from a legal standpoint.

What recruitment services do you offer?

There are a few options depending on your situation:

  • Contingency: Success-based recruitment if you're looking for an extra set of eyes on the market.

  • Retained Search: An upfront commitment, allowing me to allocate more time & resources to your vacancy.

  • Consultancy: Bespoke recruitment support if you have multiple vacancies or need help with parts of your hiring process.

If you're unsure which would suit your team, let's book a call & talk it through.

How does contingency recruitment work?

If you hire someone I've introduced, we'll charge a placement fee in line with our agreed terms.

This is how many clients prefer to work if their vacancies aren't urgent or they'd like some additional help finding candidates.

Often I already have relevant people in my network who are waiting to hear about their next opportunity.

What is retained search?

A retained search involves an upfront payment as a commitment to working together.

This allows me to properly allocate time & resources to your vacancy, knowing that you're trusting me to find the right person.

If you have an urgent hire or a tricky skillset that's proving difficult to find, it's worth discussing.

Can you support our internal recruitment team?

Absolutely, everything can be tailored to your situation.

I can help with writing job ads, sourcing/headhunting, reviewing applications, video screening & progressing candidates through your process.

If recruitment is taking time away from other priorities, we can discuss where some additional support would make the biggest difference.

How do you screen candidates?

Every candidate I introduce has been screened on a video call.

We'll discuss their experience, what they're looking for & why your opportunity could be a good fit, alongside the practical details such as salary expectations, location & availability.

Your team would then assess their technical suitability through your own interview process.

How much does recruitment cost?

This depends on whether we're working on a Contingency, Retained Search or Consultancy basis.

For more information, visit beamrec.com/employers or book a call to discuss your requirements.

Fees & terms are agreed before we get started.

I'm an Erlang or Elixir engineer, can you help me find a role?

I'm always keen to speak with engineers working in the BEAM ecosystem 💜

You can find current opportunities at beamrec.com/jobs.

Please check the location & working arrangements for each role, as remote doesn't always mean worldwide.

Can you help improve my CV/Resume?

Yes, I offer a BEAM-focused service called Resume Refresh

Sometimes it's difficult to put your experience on paper & it helps to get an extra set of eyes across it.

For $50, the process is as follows:

  • Resume submitted for review.

  • Review discussed on a personal video call, usually lasting 60-90 minutes.

  • Follow-up call booked in, giving you time to make suggested changes before we review it again.

Feedback on your public professional profiles is included too.

For more information & booking, visit beamrec.com/refresh.

Will Resume Refresh guarantee me a job?

I can't guarantee interviews or a job, those decisions sit with the companies you're applying to.

What I can offer is honest feedback from someone who spends their working days reviewing BEAM resumes & speaking with hiring teams, helping you identify what might be missing & how to better present your experience.
